My thoughts about... Descendants

By the end of the first movie of Descendants, I was a fan, but I admit that I actually started watching it without too many expectations. Despite the fact that it had the wizard behind High School Musical, Kenny Ortega and the familiar faces in the cast, I wasn't sure how much further they could go with a concept we had already seen in Ever After High. However, it had the magic to captivate me and to make me wait for each of the sequels. And what's that magic? Well for me is that, at the bottom, we see Mal´s evolution journey rooted in important themes. Here is my list of thoughts about each movie:

Descendants 1

  • It's when the VKs arrive at Auradon prep the movie actually starts getting rhythm, after all, there's no one like Kenny Ortega to make high school look cool.
  • The first Mal/Ben encounter has a lot of chemistry, from their glances to their lines (unfortunately in the next movies I didn't feel it as strong anymore).
  • The VK's fashion is always amazing, not only in this movie but in all of them, they even have little details related to their personal style.
  • There's something about the song If Only, a special feeling that I relate to and that -sometimes- makes me cry. Is in this song that we see Mal at her most vulnerable and honest self and where we get the central dilemma of her character in this movie: choosing good is frightening for her because it means putting her armor down.
Descendants 2
  • I love how in this and the next film Mal's hair changes color along with her representing her inner change.
  • Is nice to see another side of Lonnie being a badass at sword fighting like her mom Mulan.
  • Basically, everything in this movie is Ben´s fault: he fights with Mal, he gives the worst apology to her, he gets kidnapped and then also spellbound.
  • Harry doesn't sound like a villain name at all someone please explain to me that choice.
  • Every song and dance in this movie is awesome. It was hard to choose a favorite one, but In the space between is an epic friendship song and we see that the bottom reason Mal is leaving is out of fear of letting people down and feeling like her true self isn't enough.
  • Carlos and Jay being part of the girl talk with Mal because guys can talk about feelings too and being supportive and caring.
  • Didn't we had the same plot in the first movie? Ben gets a love spell from the evil girl and she steals him from his girlfriend to get the barrier down. Why are we angry at Uma for this when Mal did the same?
  • The change in the final dress reminds me of the Barbie movies.
  • The dance with water is impressive, that is not easy.

Descendants 3
  • There were too many characters and they didn't know what to do with all of them.
  • Smee kids are just there, they have one line in the whole movie.
  • Dizzy is another of the wasted characters that don't do much in this movie. She is supposed to "take care" of the twins but really all she does is sleep and eat.
  • In the music and dance department, I have to say I was expecting more since it's the last movie and while they are not bad, they aren't spectacular either, still, my favorite one here is Break this down.
  • If Audrey's spell on Mal of turning her in an old hag (I like the nod to Snowhite by the way) disappears in the Isle, why the dog can speak in the second movie if magic doesn't work there?
  • Uma and Harry were the characters with a good evolution in this movie.
  • It was great the way they portrayed the message of the movie. It doesn't feel forced since it fits the story perfectly almost like it was always meant to be. It has so much relevance today and at the same time is a good ending to the series.
